Extreme temperatures may raise risk of premature cardiovascular death

ScienceDaily (Sep. 17, 2012) ? Extreme temperatures during heat waves and cold spells may increase the risk of premature cardiovascular disease (CVD) death, according to new research in Circulation: Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, anAmerican Heart Association journal.

The study in Brisbane, Australia, is the first in which researchers examined the association between daily average temperature and "years of life lost" due to CVD. Years of life lost measures premature death by estimating years of life lost according to average life expectancy.

The findings are important because of how the body responds to temperate extremes, the growing obesity trend and Earth's climate changes, said Cunrui Huang, M.Med., M.S.P.H., the study's lead researcher and a Ph.D. scholar at the School of Public Health and Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane, Australia.

Exposure to extreme temperatures can trigger changes in blood pressure, blood thickness, cholesterol and heart rate, according to previous research.

"With increasing rates of obesity and related conditions, including diabetes, more people will be vulnerable to extreme temperatures and that could increase the future disease burden of extreme temperatures," Huang said.

Researchers collected data on daily temperatures in Brisbane, Australia between 1996 and 2004 and compared them to documented cardiovascular-related deaths for the same period.

Brisbane has hot, humid summers and mild, dry winters. The average daily mean temperature was 68.9 degrees Fahrenheit (20.5 degrees Celsius), with the coldest 1 percent of days (53 ?F /11.7 ?C) characterized as cold spells and the hottest 1 percent (84.5?F/ 29.2 ?C ) heat waves.

Per 1 million people, 72 years of life were lost per day due to CVD, researchers said.

Risk of premature CVD death rose more when extreme heat was sustained for two or more days, researchers found.

"This might be because people become exhausted due to the sustained strain on their cardiovascular systems without relief, or health systems become overstretched and ambulances take longer to reach emergency cases," said Adrian G. Barnett, Ph.D., co-author of the study and associate professor of biostatistics at QUT. "We suspect that people take better protective actions during prolonged cold weather, which might be why we did not find as great a risk of CVD during cold spells."

Spending a few hours daily in a temperate environment can help reduce heat- and cold-related illnesses and deaths, Barnett said.

Researcher acknowledged that the findings may not apply to other communities and that they only considered deaths where CVD was the underlying cause.

A shrimp that spews glowing chemicals is one of the many discoveries made by a team of scientists investigating bioluminescence at the bottom of the Caribbean Sea.

From glowing coral to shrimp that vomit light-making chemicals, seafloor creatures can create quite the flashy visual show, according to researchers who traveled into the inky depths of the Caribbean Sea to investigate the oddballs.

Even so, the researchers reported today (Sept. 6)?seafloor creatures?are less flashy than their open-ocean cousins. In the open sea, an estimated 90 percent of organisms have the capacity to glow, compared with a paltry 10-20 percent of seafloor dwellers.

"We were surprised by how little bioluminescence is down there," Tamara Frank, a marine ecologist at Nova Southeastern University and study coauthor, told LiveScience.

The researchers did, however, find an abundance of?bioluminescence?from plankton, creatures that cannot swim against a current and instead glow bluish after bumping into other organisms and structures.

The glowers at the ocean bottom included the world's first identified glow-in-the-dark anemone along with a shrimp species that vomits light as a defense mechanism, glowing coral, starfish and sea cucumbers. [See Photos of the Glowing Deep-Sea Creatures]

In the Caribbean, glowing organisms don't just make for a visual spectacle, but also have finely honed visual systems that may allow bottom dwellers to distinguish what's a meal and what's poison, a sort of color-coding vision.

Shedding light on ocean lights

Bioluminescence, light given off through a chemical reaction in living creatures, has long piqued the curiosity of researchers since Greek philosopher Aniximenes found that light emanated from water when struck by an oar nearly 2,500 years ago.

Since then, oceanographers have identified many?bioluminescent organisms, including the sorts of plankton that Aniximenes would have seen, but little remains known about the phenomenon at the ocean bottom.

Researchers ventured in the Johnson-Sea-Link submersible to nearly half a mile below the ocean surface in what could be the world?s first manned hunt for bioluminescent creatures in the benthic zone, the ecological niche of the seabed.

"If you sit there with the lights out, you'll see this little light show as plankton run into different habitats," study researcher S?nke Johnsen, a sensory biologist at Duke University, told LiveScience. "There is no substitute for actually being in that habitat to understand what it's like to be those animals, plus it's a great deal of fun."

The team of oceanographers surveyed the bottom of?the Caribbean Sea?at two different sites at a depth unreachable by natural light and to their surprise found that while few organisms could light up, what light there was came from jostled plankton.

Goldman junior bankers branch out as deals dry up

LONDON (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs has shaken up its junior investment banking teams in Europe, asking bankers to multi-task rather than specialize in particular industries, as a slowdown in deals also forces rivals to rethink the way they do business.

Several competitors, including Switzerland's Credit Suisse and Japan's Nomura , have also loosened up team structures in similar ways, making the most of their resources amid faltering revenues and cutbacks.

At Goldman, analysts and associates -- the two most junior ranks in investment banking -- have been pooled together to work on deals across industries such as healthcare, private equity and media, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters.

Divisions by country teams across Europe, the Middle East and Africa will also be lifted for junior bankers, who will instead be split into Northern and Southern groups.

A Goldman spokeswoman confirmed the contents of the memo.

Many investment banks organize their corporate finance or mergers and acquisitions (M&A) businesses into industry sectors, so that bankers can get to know certain companies well, helping them to win mandates on deals.

But activity has dried up this year as euro zone fears worsened, with fees from M&A fees in Europe tumbling some 36 percent to around $4 billion this year compared with last year, according to Thomson Reuters and Freeman Consulting data.

In response, banks have been cutting staff as well as curbing costs in IT and elsewhere, while even senior bankers specializing in areas such as equity capital markets -- advising companies on listings -- have already been branching out to take on more unfamiliar tasks.

The move by Goldman and others to reorganize teams may benefit the junior staff concerned, at least giving them deal experience in a slow market.

"The ability to have a variety of experience is in fact superior to concentrating early," said Scott Moeller, a professor in Cass Business School's finance practice who has previously worked at Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley.

Moeller said the changes were unlikely to worry clients, who were generally more concerned about the industry experience of senior advisers.

He said firms were also revisiting a model employed by investment banks well before a big boom in the M&A industry over the last 20 years gave rise to bigger, more specialized teams.

"It sounds like a back to the future move. In the 1980s it was common that you wouldn't specialize until you passed the associate level," Moeller added.

At Nomura, teams of analysts and associates in corporate finance were also reorganized in January in a more flexible manner, two sources familiar with the matter said. They are still attached to industry groups but can be asked to pitch in on deals in other areas.

Nomura declined to comment. Its investment banking division is facing job cuts as the bank looks to chop $1 billion in costs.

Credit Suisse brought in similar changes in EMEA at the start of this year, with analysts and associates previously organized by country and narrow industries redistributed to three broader industry groups.

At Goldman, the financial institutions and natural resources sector are the only ones that will be structured as before, the internal memo said. The announcement dates back to July but has only surfaced now.

On Death:?

Perhaps, dear La Bloga reader, you experienced a loss this summer:? the death of a family member, a friend, an acquaintance?? Maybe someone you know is dying.? Two weeks ago, I attended a funeral for a loved one who had died at 89 years of age.? The memorial was one of celebration and loving memories.? She had led a rich, full life, and the many friends and familia who were at the service gathered to tell stories, stories of various moments of humor, bravery, sadness, respect, jubilation.? Earlier this summer our La Bloga familia lost one of our own:? Tatiana de la Tierra.? I did not attend the memorial but I heard that it was also one of joy, one of many loved ones gathering to tell stories.? In both memorials, people gathered around pictures, personal objects, ashes.? They gathered to be close, to honor, to witness.? Years ago I read a fascinating article about elephants and their own rituals with their dead.? An elephant herd will surround its dead and each one will take turns smelling it, touching it, walking around it.??
This will go on for days.? And years later, when they pass a certain spot, they will remember the fallen member or if they come upon its bones, they will stop and take time to touch it, smell it, walk in circles around it.? The giraffes do the same.??
This week there was an article in the BBC regarding the scrub jay also paying keen attention to its dead. (Click here for story) About a week and a half ago, I was riding my bike down the Bison Trail and suddenly I felt enveloped in Tatiana?s memory.? I opened my arms and repeated her name several times.? It felt like each cloud hovering above the Bison Trail was an aspect of her presence.? She was always a more than one-dimensional being.? Tatiana was an alive being just as Joy Castro?s Island of Bones reveals a being keenly alive, just as my 89 year-old loved one was eulogized as one who celebrated life.?

The Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, writes about the importance of living a fully alive and complex life in his poem, "You Start Dying Slowly."? I send it to you here, dearest Bloga reader because I kept thinking about his poem while writing this blog for you. There are different kinds of living and dying and Neruda deftly enumerates the differences in this cautionary poem. ?

New Geranium Gives Allergy Sufferers Nothing to Sniff About

A new type of geranium, genetically engineered to be long-lived and lack pollen, offers the promise of sneeze-free plants for allergy sufferers.

Researchers in Spain have used a genetically modified bacterium to "infect" geraniums, creating plants that are not able to spread allergens nor reproduce with wild plants ? a handy modification to prevent so-called "transgenic" plants from contaminating natural stock, said study researcher Luis Ca?as, a scientist at the Instituto de Biolog?a Molecular y Celular de Plantas (IBMCP) in Spain.

"These biotechnological approaches could be used in other?ornamental or crop species," Ca?as told LiveScience.

The researchers chose to modify Pelargonium plants, flowering shrubs known colloquially as geraniums or storkbills. These plants have long been selectively bred for traits such as colorful flowers, but Ca?as and his colleagues wanted to bestow long life on the plants. They also wanted to make them sterile, removing their ability to produce pollen.

"The lack of pollen not only?is great for hay fever sufferers, but also prevents accidental release?of the transgenes into the environment," Ca?as said.

To do so, the researchers genetically altered Agrobacterium tumefaciens, the bacteria that causes the plant ailment crown gall disease, to carry a modified gene that would increase the production of the plant hormone cytokinin, which has an anti-aging effect on plant cells. They modified another gene that would interfere with the production of pollen and anthers, the little round lobes that hold the pollen on the flower.

The bacteria carried these modified genes into the Pelargonium cells, changing their DNA. The researchers then grew new plants from these modified plant cells. The researchers detail the process Friday (Aug. 31) in the journal BMC Plant Biology.

The result was small-leaved geraniums with more vibrant ? and longer-lived ? flowers than usual. These allergy-free geraniums aren't yet available at a greenhouse near you (as genetically modified organisms, they will have to go through a regulatory approval process), Ca?as said, but the idea is that they will be someday.

"The overall goal of our work is to delay the senescence [aging] process and to?produce long-lived plants, which could have commercial interest both?for producers and consumers of ornamental plants," Ca?as said.?

A millimeter-scale, wirelessly powered cardiac device

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? A team of engineers at Stanford has demonstrated the feasibility of a super-small, implantable cardiac device that gets its power not from batteries, but from radio waves transmitted from outside the body. The implanted device is contained in a cube just eight-tenths of a millimeter in radius. It could fit on the head of pin.

The findings were published in the journal Applied Physics Letters. In their paper, the researchers demonstrated wireless power transfer to a millimeter-sized device implanted five centimeters inside the chest on the surface of the heart -- a depth once thought out of reach for wireless power transmission.

The paper's senior author was Ada Poon, a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford. Sanghoek Kim and John Ho, both doctoral candidates in Poon's lab, were first authors.

The engineers say the research is a major step toward a day when all implants are driven wirelessly. Beyond the heart, they believe such devices might include swallowable endoscopes -- so-called "pillcams" that travel the digestive tract -- permanent pacemakers and precision brain stimulators; virtually any medical applications where device size and power matter.

A revolution in the body

Implantable medical devices in the human body have revolutionized medicine. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of pacemakers, cochlear implants and drug pumps are today helping people live relatively normal lives, but these devices are not without engineering challenges.

First off, they require power, which means batteries, and batteries are bulky. In a device like a pacemaker, the battery alone accounts for as much as half the volume of the device it drives. Second, batteries have finite lives. New surgery is needed when they wane.

"Wireless power solves both challenges," said Poon.

Last year, Poon made headlines when she demonstrated a wirelessly powered, self-propelled device capable of swimming through the bloodstream. To get there she needed to overturn some long-held assumptions about delivery of wireless power through the human body.

Her device works by a combination inductive and radiative transmission of power. Both are types of electromagnetic transfer in which a transmitter sends radio waves to a coil of wire inside the body. The radio waves produce an electrical current in the coil sufficient to operate a small device.

There is an indirect relationship between the frequency of the transmitted radio waves and the size of the receive antenna. That is, to deliver a desired level of power, lower frequency waves require bigger coils. Higher frequency waves can work with smaller coils.

"For implantable medical devices, therefore, the goal is a high-frequency transmitter and a small receiver, but there is one big hurdle," explained Kim.

Ignoring consensus

Existing mathematical models have held that high frequency radio waves do not penetrate far enough into human tissue, necessitating the use of low-frequency transmitters and large antennas -- too large to be practical for implantable devices.

Ignoring the consensus, Poon proved the models wrong. Human tissue dissipates electric fields quickly, it is true, but radio waves can travel in a different way -- as alternating waves of electric and magnetic fields. With the correct equations in hand, she discovered that high-frequency signals travel much deeper than anyone suspected.

"In fact, to achieve greater power efficiency, it is actually advantageous that human tissue is a very poor electrical conductor," said Kim. "If it were a good conductor, it would absorb energy, create heating and prevent sufficient power from reaching the implant."

According to their revised models, the researchers found that the maximum power transfer through human tissue occurs at about 1.7 billion cycles per second.

"In this high-frequency range, we can increase power transfer by about ten times over earlier devices," said Ho, who honed the mathematical models.

The discovery meant that the team could shrink the receive antenna by a factor of ten as well, to a scale that makes wireless implantable devices feasible. At that the optimal frequency, a millimeter-radius coil is capable of harvesting more than 50 microwatts of power, well in excess of the needs of a recently demonstrated eight-microwatt pacemaker.

Additional challenges

With the dimensional challenges solved, the team found themselves bound in by other engineering constraints. First, electronic medical devices must meet stringent health standards established by the IEEE, particularly with regard to tissue heating. Second, the team found that receive and transmit antennas had to be optimally oriented to achieve maximum efficiency. Differences in alignment of just a few degrees could produce troubling drops in power.

"This can't happen medical devices," said Poon. "As the human heart and body are in constant motion, solving this issue was critical to the success of our research."

The team responded by designing an innovative slotted transmit antenna structure. It resembles a swastika, but delivers consistent power efficiency regardless of orientation of the two antennas.

The new design serves additionally to focus the radio waves precisely at the point inside the body where the implanted device rests on the surface of the heart, increasing the electric field where it is needed most, but canceling it elsewhere. This helps reduce overall tissue heating to levels well within the IEEE standards. Poon has applied for a patent for the antenna structure.

1st death linked to new swine flu is Ohioan, 61

CINCINNATI (AP) ? The death of a 61-year-old Ohio woman is the first in the nation associated with a new swine flu strain, the state Department of Health said Friday.

The woman, whose identity was not released, was from central Ohio's Madison County and died this week following an illness she contracted after having contact with hogs at the Ross County Fair.

The woman had underlying medical conditions, but the H3N2v influenza virus may have contributed to her death, the department said.

The strain was found in U.S. pigs in 2010 and people in July 2011, and it appears to spread more easily from swine to humans than other flu viruses, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has said.

The death was among 12 new cases of the virus in the country this week, the CDC reported. Ohio saw two other cases. Wisconsin had seven, and Minnesota and Pennsylvania each had one.

Ohio and Indiana lead the nation with infections for the year; Ohio has had 101, while Indiana has had 138, according to the CDC.

Twelve people across the nation were infected last year, compared with 289 so far this year, according to the CDC.

Ted Wymyslo, director of the Ohio Department of Health, said most of Ohio's cases have been mild illnesses. People from 6 months to 61 years old have been infected, and many of them have been linked to contact with hogs at fairs.

Wymyslo urged at-risk groups to avoid swine exhibits and take other precautions. Those groups include young children, older residents, pregnant woman and people with weakened immune systems or underlying medical conditions.

Lynn Finelli, the lead for the surveillance and outbreak response team in the CDC's influenza division, said in a statement that the agency was saddened to hear of the Ohio death.

"Like with seasonal flu, we have been ? and continue to be ? particularly concerned about people with factors that put them at high risk of serious complications if they get the flu," she said. "These people should absolutely not have contact with pigs or visit pig arenas at fairs this summer."

As with seasonal flu, the CDC recommends that people with high-risk conditions who develop flu-like symptoms contact their doctor immediately.

"Prompt antiviral treatment in a high risk person can mean the difference between having a milder illness versus a very serious illness that could result in a hospital stay or even death," Finelli said.

Symptoms of H3N2v include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, and fatigue.
